UNDERSTANDING WING MATERIAL

UNDERSTANDING WING MATERIAL

HOW DOES HALCYON SELECT ITS MATERIAL USED IN BUILDING ITS WINGS?

Halcyon has spent years testing materials to make sure our wings are made to be as rugged as possible. We carefully select fabrics that balance long life and efficient design. Standard production Eclipse, Evolve and Explorer wings are constructed with an outer shell made from 1000-Denier urethane coated nylon for superior abrasion resistance and an internal bladder of 420-Denier urethane-coated nylon for puncture resistance without stiffness.

Halcyon’s selection of materials is based on their abilities to stand up to the sort of conditions that one finds in extreme exploration making it an exceptional tool for all level of divers.

So what is “denier”? Denier is a unit of fineness for fibers, based on a standard mass per length of 1 gram per 9,000 meters of yarn. It is defined as the mass in grams per 9000 meters. Thus 9,000 meters of 15-denier nylon, used in nylon stockings, weighs 15 g/0.5 oz. A denser fiber (like the 1000-Denier of our wings) results in a greater strength and abrasion resistance as compared to a lesser denier fabric.
